M's Take the Lead!

MLB Standings

Last night the M's took the lead over the San Diego Padres by 2 tenths of a percentage point in the race to draft Steven Strasburg #1 overall. The Seattle Mariners are riding the coattails of a clutch 6 game losing streak to jump into the lead for the rights to the best pitcher in this years draft.

This is just awesome. Of course we are going to screw it up and draft some idiot druggy dropout that we can't sign and it becomes a wasted pick.

Oh wait...like are last draft?

no, no, no. he'll develop into a really good minor league pitcher, they'll deal him for a washed-up NL bat to play DH, then he'll turn into a multi cy young winner. duh.

Yeah, it's always awesome when your crappy GM tries to save his job by breaking the one unbreakable rule of the baseball draft: you never, ever draft on immediate need. The M's thought they needed another arm in the bullpen for the stretch run, so they draft one and it worked out awesome.

This doesn't get talked about very much in the huge failings of Bavasi, but that might very well be one of the worst. He basically burned down the house then pissed on the ashes with the last draft pick.

If it is any conciliation, it looks like the Giants are going to burn up Tim Lincecum and Morrow may not end up as a total waste as the ROOGY in the pen for the rest of his career.
